Jenny Cox: Like Logs
Fleisher/Ollman is pleased to announce two solo exhibitions featuring the work of Anthony Campuzano and Jenny Cox, who both use text, mark-making, and color as the foundation for drawing. In Venture Inward, Campuzano presents a new body of work that builds on his signature approach to drawing as an outlet for fandom, exuberant sharing, storytelling, and homage. For Campuzano, homage is democratic and wide-ranging. Drawings are composed around an assortment of people, famous and anonymous: from 1960s actresses such as Rita Tushingham to the early 20th century Cubist artist George Braque to a child of artistic promise whom Campuzano taught during a summer camp art program. Utterances—asides really—made by singers during live performances may catch Campuzano’s ear just as much as a song lyric, and be transposed into a text drawing. Campuzano’s experience of working in a newsstand as a teenager enveloped by the glut of images and words featured on magazine covers and tabloids had a profound influence on him and continues to impact his art in the present. Book covers, record albums, and film advertising —the graphic design of popular culture—similarly filter into Campuzano’s practice. Just as Campuzano pays homage to the obscure or unfamiliar, personally significant texts sometimes find their way into his drawings, especially notes written to the artist by his mother in which the artist replicates her meticulous cursive. Another trademark of Campuzano’s work is the inclusion of small photographs of source material or photographs of drawing studies that are recessed directly into the larger drawings. In Venture Inward, for the first time Campuzano will also share the aforementioned small-scale studies as discrete art works, rather than relegating them to photo- reproductions or never-seen private creations.
Jenny Cox’s marker drawings featured in her Fleisher/Ollman exhibition Like Logs consist of conglomerations of brightly-colored lozenges, each containing words and various hatch marks—refugee text balloons from comics as if they were somehow stolen from their original sources, completely transformed by the artist, and stacked one on top of the other like logs. “Like logs” is also the title of a drawing in the exhibition and an accurate description of Cox’s accretive methodology in general. Jenny Cox began working at Lower Merion Vocational Training Center (LMVTC) in 1981 as a piece worker and paper shredder. When LMVTC became Center for Creative Works in 2011, the Wynnewood, PA studio and exhibition space dedicated to artists with developmental disabilities, she was hesitant to make art at first. She was eventually inspired to paint after observing her peers. Early paintings featured lines and dots as design elements, color studies realized through blending. Eventually, Cox discovered markers and pens, and her work took off: marks developing into letters, letters into words, and cells of color demarcating the space of her architecturally-minded compositions.
Anthony Campuzano (b. 1975, Philadelphia, PA, lives Philadelphia) holds a degree from the Tyler School of Art (2000) and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2000). He has had solo exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; Churner and Churner, New York; White Columns, New York; Fleisher/Ollman, Philadelphia; and the Levy Gallery, Moore College of Art, Philadelphia. Campuzano has been included in group exhibitions at the FLAG Art Foundation, New York; Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, NY; Fleisher/Ollman; Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia; Jack Shainman Gallery, New York; ICA Maine College of Art, Portland, ME; Salon 94, New York; Franklin Parrasch Gallery, New York; Bellwether, New York; Andrea Rosen Gallery, New York; and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, among others. He received a 2009 Pew Fellowship in the Arts. His work is in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
Jenny Cox (b. 1959) has been featured in several group exhibitions at Philadelphia-area venues including Center of Creative Works, Wynnewood, PA; Fleisher/Ollman, Philadelphia; Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia; Delaware County Community College, Media, PA; AIRSPACE Gallery, Philadelphia; Pageant Soloveev, Philadelphia; and Grounds for Sculpture, Trenton, NJ.
The gallery will be closed Saturday, May 26 for Memorial Day Weekend, reopening Tuesday, May 29.
